The United States has begun a humanitarian evacuation and is relocating a group of Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) applicants to San Diego.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in San Diego is working alongside communities and partners to support Afghans living in San Diego.

SIV evacuees are interpreters, medical personnel and community members who served the U.S. government during the war in Afghanistan. The IRC has resettled more than 16,000 Afghan SIV recipients since Congress established the program in 2006, and is committed to ensuring that these families are given a chance to seek safety and rebuild their lives in the United States.

San Diego County has been a preferred destination because of the area’s vibrant Afghan community. The IRC is prepared to welcome and support incoming SIVs who might be assigned to our office for resettlement support. In addition, we are able to welcome and serve SIV walk-ins.

Here are four ways you can support our Afghan neighbors in San Diego:
Donate locally to the IRC in San Diego. As we continue to receive new SIV clients into San Diego, we are working with local communities and partners to provide housing support, making sure their kids are enrolled in school and these families are receiving the medical care they need. Please consider becoming a monthly donor at any amount to help our local, San Diego-based staff continue serving refugees from Afghanistan and other crisis zones around the world. Show Afghans your support. Afghan community members in San Diego are courageously sharing their stories in the media. Follow us at @IRCSanDiego on Twitter and Facebook as we continue to uplift these stories as well as local events organized by the Afghan community.
Welcome a refugee. Open your home as a place of refuge for emergency temporary housing with IRC’s partner Airbnb.org’s Open Homes Program.
Advocate and raise your voice. Call and email President Joe Biden and your Members of Congress and demand they protect vulnerable Afghans in need of safety, including those who risked their lives to serve with the US. Take action at Rescue.org/Act.

The scenes out of Afghanistan are heartbreaking. Now, our country is engaged in a refugee evacuation of great magnitude and Jewish Family Service of San Diego is actively involved. The number and pace of resettlement is like nothing we’ve seen in recent years.

Jewish Family Service stands ready to Welcome the Stranger with dignity and respect and is actively assisting Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) recipients from Afghanistan. As one of the primary refugee resettlement agencies in San Diego, JFS has already resettled 79 individuals (18 families)* with SIVs from Afghanistan from August 6 through August 31, 2021. Our staff and volunteers will remain at-the-ready to accept more families in the coming days, weeks, and months. *as of August 31, 2021

Welcome to the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs

The mission of the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA) is to provide resources and information to newly arriving refugees and immigrants in San Diego County and connect them with local service providers. OIRA is located in Homeless Solutions & Equitable Communities, a department of San Diego County’s Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA).

OIRA is managed by the County Refugee Coordinator (CRC), who serves as the primary point of contact between HHSA and the local community on refugee issues. The CRC is also the liaison between the County of San Diego and the California Refugee Program Bureau and participates in the State Advisory Council.

While OIRA does not provide direct services, it is responsible for the administration of HHSA’s Refugee Employment Services (RES) through a network of contracted service providers that support newly arriving refugee families’ goal of economic self-sufficiency. Who Are Refugees: Refugees are unable to return to their country of origin because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution because of race, religion, nationality, membership in a social group, or political opinion. They are granted this special immigration status (refugee status) by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security while outside the United States.

Refugee Resettlement Process: Refugees are granted their immigration status by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security overseas and brought to the United States by the U.S. Department of State. Upon arrival, they are helped through a wide range of programs and benefits. See the infographic below for the process once a refugee arrives in San Diego County.

Ну в калифорнии если без выкрутасов, то можно прожить. Мы когда ездили туда несколько лет тому назад, в лагуна бич квартирки на самом берегу океана стоили вроде 700-900 аренда. ПрЯмо на берегу океана, вышел и нырнул в океан. Однобедрумнык конечно. Но много ли человеку надо))

Ну может не конкретно в ваш район, лагуна бич вот как раз подходит для страдальцев. Да и государство подмогнет и построит жильё. Напечатают денег да построят. Не трудно же, ради счастья всего человечества

Вы мыслите по-советски. Тут не государство распоряжается, а штат. Штат о своих заботится прежде всего.
В 2010 году, когда я переехала в СД, полгода снимала комнату у девочки в ее новеньком low income апартменте. Там пол апартмента жили черные из Луизианы, кажется, пострадавшие от Катрины. Апартмент был построен, но еще не заселен, их и поселили.
Пожили годик-полтора, думали, что они уже тут останутся, но их быстро отсюда выперли взад.
