As a new variant of Covid-19 forces the UK and the EU to take drastic measures, the World Health Organization has backed the UK’s stance that there’s currently no evidence that the mutation is any deadlier than the original strain, pointing out that new variants are normal in viruses.
‘There is zero evidence that the new coronavirus variant increases severity of the disease,’ said WHO’s Health Emergencies Program Chief Mike Ryan, citing data from Britain.
Ryan backed travel bans on the UK, as a matter of caution.
‘That is prudent,’ he said. ‘But it is also important that everyone recognizes that this happens, these variants occur.’
Evidence from the UK suggests that the new variant could be as much as 70 percent more infectious than the original, but Ryan said that mutations of the virus are unlikely to render current drugs and vaccines ineffective.
This was supported by Ugur Sahin, chief executive of BioNTech, co-developer of with Pfizer vaccine. He said that it’s ‘highly likely’ that their jab will work on the new variant and that, if necessary, the company could synthesize a new variant within six weeks

A top public health official on the White House coronavirus task force has said she will retire after it emerged she hosted a holiday gathering.

Dr Deborah Birx, who is 64, cited the criticism she had faced for a family get-together over Thanksgiving in Delaware in her decision to step aside.

She had urged Americans in the days before Thanksgiving to restrict gatherings to "your immediate household".

But it emerged on Sunday she had travelled from Washington to one of her other properties, on Fenwick Island in Delaware, where she was joined by three generations of her family from two households.

Pharmacist reportedly injected with four doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine

An Israeli pharmacist is really protected against COVID-19 — after being accidentally injected with four doses of the Pfizer shot, according to a report.

Uday Azizi, a Maccabi Healthcare Services pharmacist, said he was feeling fine after being sent to a hospital to be monitored because he mistakenly received the extra amounts, the Times of Israel reported.

The health care worker who administered the jab apparently did not realize that each Pfizer vial contains several doses — usually five, but sometimes even more, according to the outlet.

Azizi said he has so far only experienced mild, common side effects — local pain and some redness at the injection site.

“I have no problem with again getting four doses,” he said. “Let’s be optimistic … about the vaccine, the entire situation and the new year maybe.”

Officials in Oregon say a "superspreader action" is likely behind two recent Covid-19 outbreaks in the state.
The action in question: A person knowingly went to work while sick and later tested positive for the virus, Douglas County officials said last week.
Two separate Covid-19 outbreaks have now been traced back to that person, officials said. Seven people died as a result of the first outbreak, and hundreds of people were forced to self-isolate over the second one.
"One of those outbreaks has resulted in seven deaths, and the other recent outbreak has placed over 300 people/families in quarantine," a December 17 statement from the Douglas County government reads. "We can't even imagine the tremendous remorse these people are feeling right now, and we sympathize with them."
County officials referred to the incident as a "superspreader action," calling it "one of the most concerning issues we are facing right now." It's a twist on the term "superspreader event," which refers to large in-person gatherings such as weddings, parties or religious services where the presence of one infected person has the potential to spur a viral outbreak.
They also urged people to stay home if they are experiencing symptoms and to follow other safety protocols.
Officials didn't share the infected person's place of employment, or when they went to work while sick.
Douglas County, which is located in southern Oregon and has a population of about 111,000, has seen 1,315 total Covid-19 cases as of Tuesday. That includes people who have tested positive for the virus, as well as people who are presumed to be positive.

Oxford vaccine researchers have found ‘winning formula’, AstraZeneca chief says

The head of the firm behind the new Oxford/AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine has said researchers have found a “winning formula” with their two-dose system.

AstraZeneca chief Pascal Soriot told The Sunday Times he is convinced that subsequent data from the trial of the vaccine will show it has achieved an efficacy equal to Pfizer/BioNTech at 95 per cent and Moderna at 94.5 per cent.

“We think we have figured out the winning formula and how to get efficacy that, after two doses, is up there with everybody else,” he said, adding: “I can’t tell you more because we will publish at some point.”

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has praised vaccination efforts so far, telling the Mail on Sunday: “There will be tough days and months ahead, but there are reasons to look ahead to a brighter future and what 2021 promises.

On Christmas Eve, the Department of Health and Social Care said more than 600,000 people had received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, according to the Press Association.

So far, however, the rollout in care homes had been limited to seven areas.

The rollout of vaccines comes as a new variant of coronavirus continues to be blamed for soaring rates of cases across the country.

Cases of the variant have been confirmed across Europe including in France, Italy, Denmark, Spain, Iceland, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands, as well as around the globe in Australia, Japan and Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Dr Barbara Yaffe, the associate chief medical officer of Canada’s Ontario province, said the first two confirmed cases were identified in a couple from the country’s Durham region with no known travel history.

In the UK, new lockdown measures came into effect on Boxing Day in an effort to reduce the spread of the new variant and bring down coronavirus case numbers in general.

More than 6 million people in east and southeast England went into the highest level of restrictions under the new measures.

Areas that moved to tier 4 include Sussex, Oxfordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, parts of Essex not already in the highest tier, Waverley in Surrey and Hampshire, except for the New Forest.

The tier 4 restrictions ask that residents stay home and enforce a limit on household mixing to two people outdoors. Under the rules, many shops will also be closed.

Scientists trial new drug which could provide instant immunity against Covid 19

Scientists are trialling a new drug which could provide immunity against Covid 19 instantly.
The drug, which could give immediate protection to people exposed to coronavirus, may even be available by March.
Experts at the University College London Hospitals NHS Trust (UCLH) are currently looking at an antibody which could provide long-term protection to patients when it is too late to offer a vaccine.
The trial, which has been dubbed Storm Chaser, could save thousands of life.
The antibody could be given as treatment to care home residents, hospital patients and students in a bid to stop the spread of the virus.
Dr Catherine Houlihan, a virologist at University College London Hospitals NHS trust (UCLH), said: “If we can prove that this treatment works and prevent people who are exposed to the virus going on to develop Covid-19, it would be an exciting addition to the arsenal of weapons being developed to fight this dreadful virus.”

Researchers in the study have already recruited its first participants.
They believe the antibody - known as AZD7442 and developed by AstraZeneca - may offer immediate protection to people who have recently been exposed to the bug.
The scientists are hoping the trial will show long term protection of coronavirus for between six and 12 months.
Dr Houlihan added: “We know that this antibody combination can neutralise the virus.
"So we hope to find that giving this treatment via injection can lead to immediate protection against the development of Covid-19 in people who have been exposed – when it would be too late to offer a vaccine.”
If successful, the antibody treatment could help reduce the coronavirus's impact until everyone in the UK is immunised, the Guardian reports.
The scientist said: "The advantage of this medicine is that it gives you immediate antibodies.
