"August 13th was another typical day here in Florida. We faced the usual scorching heat and palpable humidity. But that didn’t particularly bother my 14-year-old son William because he had just made his high school football team. As a freshman, he was working hard to play in the first game of the season.

William rushed to team camp full of excitement that morning, but he never made it back home that afternoon. He died from a heat stroke that may have been preventable.

As I have tried to put the pieces of my heart together, I wondered how this could have happened. I found through research that heat stroke leads to an average of one young athlete death nearly every other day. I also learned that there aren’t mandatory heat stroke prevention protocols in place that coaches and trainers must abide by. I knew I had to do something so that fewer tragedies would hit the homes of families like mine.

I started a petition on Change.org urging the National Federation of State High School Associations and the Florida High School Athletic Association to mandate vitals measurement for high school athletes competing in hot weather conditions.

Fortunately, several states have moved to try to prevent these tragedies. Kentucky requires coldwater tubs to be present at practices in hot weather. Georgia can fine schools for not following the guidelines. A number of other states have adopted these “guidelines” for coaches and trainers to follow. But guidelines alone can’t cut it.

What happened to William could have happened to any one of the millions of high school athletes competing that day. He started to feel dizzy, so coaches tried to cool him down. His temperature was 107 degrees. Before long, he passed out. Medical staff tried CPR to revive him. But just like that, he was gone – far too soon.

You have a chance to do something now that can help to prevent more young athlete deaths. Mandatory vitals measurements have the potential to make sure that young people – who often don’t know their own limitations – get help before it’s too late.
